LaunDream 101: Swimwear Care

It’s that time of year in sunny Huntington Beach; swim season! The sun is shining, the water is warm, and your new bathing suit is waiting for its inaugural outing. But don’t let your favorite boardies or bikini fade. Take some advice from us and keep your swimwear looking fresh with these care tips!

Step one: Body oils, pool chemicals, and salt water all take their toll on fabrics, especially lycra and spandex, which are present in most swimwear.  Immediately rinse your bathing suit thoroughly with cold water after removal. Play it even safer and soak for up to 30 minutes to be sure the job is done!

Step two: Hand washing is the best way to treat your swimwear and keep them lasting as long as possible. Avoid chemicals and never use bleach!  Instead, drop some detergent in the sink and wash away whatever the soaking process didn’t. Be sure to swish around and agitate the water a bit, and gently squeeze, rather than ring out the suit afterwards.

If you prefer to use the washing machine, laundromat near you, or simply don’t have time for hand washing, wash on a cold cycle and use a detergent meant for delicate fabrics.  Warm water will cause stretching and harsh, chemical filled detergents will cause fabric breakdown!

Step three: Lay your swimsuit out to dry.  The sun can fade the colors and damage delicate fibers, so avoid direct sunlight when drying.  Dryers are rough on fabrics as well, so be sure to avoid!
